“What the hell?” I groaned at the incessant pounding that broke my slumber.

Tiredness consumed me as I peeked my head from beneath the comforter, cracking an eye open to combat the glaring sun that shined through my blinds. The wine that I’d spent the day prior drinking, coupled with the heavy but satisfying food Ms. Walker cooked, put me down for the count once Musa dropped me home.

The thought of him caused me to reach for my phone that rested next to my pillow. I sighed when I checked my notifications; none were from him. Musa had spoken little on the ride to my place, and it was like pulling teeth for a simple goodbye. The dynamic had shifted in the short time between him going to his meeting and returning. When I asked him about it, he dismissed the conversation altogether. Musa was so damn stubborn most times that I didn’t even attempt to pull it out of him.

As if I’d thought him up, my phone vibrated in my hold as his name flashed across the screen. I shot up while clearing my throat and wiped cold from the corners of my eyes before answering.

“Good morning.”

“Do you not hear me knocking on your damn door?” he grouched, causing my eyes to roll before I ended the call and tossed my phone.

The air conditioning whirled on as I lugged from bed, refusing to rush since Musa was on my damn time. My arms stretched into the air while I scanned the room for my slippers and then padded across the chilled floor to where I’d placed them next to my ottoman. I slipped them on and declined to cover my nightwear before trudging to the door.

The sunlight blinded me when I opened it, and I shielded my eyes with a squint while stepping back so that Musa could enter. His ever-present scowl marred his handsome features as he stepped inside, lifting his fitted cap to wipe sweat from his forehead.

“It’s a damn heat wave today, and you had me outside, burning to a fucking crisp.” He dropped the bag in his hand and it hit the floor with a thud.

“What is that?”

“A new lock for your door.”

“I don’t need a new lock, Musa.”

“Does that nigga still have a key?” he retorted, and I blew an exasperated breath. “That’s what I thought. He could have walked in here last night, and then what? My daughter has to come here, too, and I’ll be damned if she does while he can come and go as he pleases.”

“So, you’re still letting me teach Lena?”

“As long as you do what I told you.”

“Musa, you can’t give me an ultimatum like that and expect me to jump to it. I need time.”

“Then take it, but she won’t be around while you do. Can you move out of my way so that I can get this done?”

He shoved me aside and widened the door before kneeling. I moved closer with folded arms, tipping forward so that I could peek into the bag as he pulled out a box, along with a couple of tools to dismantle my lock.
